Jordin Really Sparks

May 16th, 2007

As I presumed earlier, the next American Idol is going to be someone fair looking. And between Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks, I’d go for Jordin Sparks.

If you’d go to AI history, only the winners who really look good and are females, make it big in the music industry. So far, only Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are making waves. Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks still need to sell more records to prove their idol power.

So for this season, I believe that Jordin is going to win. But if she didn’t, then she’ll be like Katharine McPhee who really made Taylor go down. Mark my word!

I mean Blake isn’t that good looking and he’s not even a good singer. Man, America is getting worse year after year. Ear cleaning must be done ‘cuz worst things could happen - like making a Sanjaya an American Idol. Duh!

you make a good point. but if you don’t mind, please allow me to disagree…

american idol is all about marketability. it’s not about gender or talent. katharine, kelly and carrie cater to a wide demographic. the target market of ruben and fantasia is flooded with artists. and taylor’s demo is just too darn small.

yes, jordin is a better singer. but, if idol were all about talent, the whole top 24 would be a different story.

blake caters to a demo similar to that of katharine, kelly and carrie. jordin seems to aim for the same market as ruben and fantasia.

blake also offers something original. jordin does not. she’s just another black soul singer.

yes, jordin could experience some success. especially if she loses a lot of weight. but the odds are in favor of blake. :)

Hey dj rick! Thanks for commenting my latest entry.

Yeah AI is about marketability, and thats why the winner is always the one who got the biggest amount of votes. What i really wanted to point out is that I am sure Jordin will win cuz she obviously is the better singer (but I could be wrong, America always surprises me). And only winners who are good looking make it big. And it so happens that they are all girls.

But its true Jordin’s style is RNB and theres none yet from AI who gets big in RNB. But I think one of the major reasons why Ruben and Fantasia didnt make it, is they are not as good looking as Kelly and Katharine. So I can say that Jordin has an edge over the 2. Plus shes not plain RNB, she can also be pop like Kelly. And this wasnt possible with Fantasia’s or Ruben’s type of voice.

So let’s just wait and see! (:

dj rick made a good point that idol is about marketability and not just about looks.

but i have my own point. i think its not really about these 2 things but on how good their materials are. yeah if youe good looking you have an edge, thats why kelly was made to lose weight, fantasia was made to wear braces, etc. yeah the market also has a factor - RNB is flooded by so many artists, while pop is ruled only by a few like britney spears and justin timberlake; the same thing with country music thats why carie made it; but hw come taylor didnt made it inot his old school pop and blues when theres not much competitors. carrie made it, he didnt, but country isnt that much listened in america, it is actually a small market cuz americans tend to patronize RNB.

this brings back that issue fantasia and ruben didnt make it. they actually have the biggest opportunity cuz it is the easiest market to penetrate. if you notice, almost every week, a new RNB artist becomes popular. so with the popularity of AI, how come the 2 cant make it? answer is simple - they dont have good RNB materials. thats why akon, ciara, alicia keys, neyo beat them.

    Lora,

When thinking about marketability in the US, you have to keep in mind the socio-cultural atmosphere there. Both pop and R&B markets are flooded with artists, but the large majority of the US population is white. So artists falling into that demographic have a much easier chance to break-in and stay for good. This is where Blake’s mainstream advantage is.

The R&B market is much smaller, so Jordin mustn’t try to take the road of Fantasia or Reuben or she’ll be doomed. Either way, she has a rougher road ahead of her than Blake. It’s a good thing she has the AI money behind her. That’ll help.

    Bono,

Your insight on the R&B market being single-based is correct. But I think Lora and I were talking about long-term success. Both Reuben and Fantasia were able to break-in with successful singles, but that was it. They didn’t stick the way that Kelly and Carrie have.

Taylor’s market is actually the smallest and thus hardest to penetrate. The white Adult-Contemporary market is much much slower to purchase music and concert tickets than their younger counterparts. Plus, he competes against older artists with “Greatest Hits” CDs. Even with the AI dough he has the toughest road ahead of him. That’s why I was glad to see him win.

First, congrats to the bubbly Jordin Sparks. So I was right shes gonna win.

Regarding that American socio-cultural atmosphere, then Jordin really has the advantage cuz shes both white and black. And her music too is also a mix of white and black, she can be katharine/kelly and be beyonce too. These are facts to consider: Jordin is young, attractive, real, and most of all, a breath a fresh air compared to our current fascination with other singers such as Britney, JoJo, etc. She also shows great maturity for being so young. Both Kelly and Carrie have some limitations. Kelly tends to get a little diva, and Carrie is entrenched in the country world, and country music fans are a little weird when their stars crossover into pop world.

Blake could benefit from not winning – the kinda-rock-kinda-not fans he would appeal to most might view his runner-up finish as cooler than being crowned “Idol.” He has a huge following, yes, but Clay A, Kellie P and Justin G, had that too! He didnt win cuz he sings poorly, his airiness covering the fact that he lacks force and precision. Cuz if he did, not only would we have just witnessed the dullest, strangest, most bloated finale to the dullest, strangest most bloated “Idol” season ever, but we’d have wound up with the first truly undeserving winner as well. His beatboxing is above-average, sure, but he’s not hip-hop – thus that flavor can at best be seasoning, not a foundation.

So let’s just wait and see. But Im really hoping that both of them will last in the music industry. I think people are getting bored with AI cuz they offer really nothing new… I just hope that the downturn in viewers’ turnout isnt a sign of how this season’s winner/s upcoming record sales. So Im hoping for a fresh album, since the first album always leaves a lasting impression, if their debut isnt good enough, I have to say they’d just be another Reuben / Diana / Fantasia / Bo Bice.
